Most of our referrals come from Lactation Consultants and Coaches. They are generally on the front line and are able to observe the most common symptoms which include:
Difficulty latching on or falling or popping off the breast easily.
Gumming, biting or chewing the nipple while nursing.
Gassy babies (babies with ties often swallow a lot of air as they cannot maintain proper suction).
Poor weight gain.
Excessive drooling.
Baby is not able to fully drain the breast.
Choking on milk or popping off to gasp for air while nursing.
Falling asleep during feedings, then waking a short while later to nurse again.
Sleep deprivation (due to the need for frequent feedings).
Extended nursing episodes that are 'marathon nursing' sessions.
Clicking noises while sucking
Gap between teeth and other jaw issues.
Once a referral is made, or if you feel your infant or child is suffering from a lip or tongue-tie, we will schedule you an appointment with Dr. Strutz. Please arrive planning to nurse your child after the treatment.
Know that before treatment recommendations are made, a thorough exam will be done to check for both lip and tongue ties. However, we generally plan adequate time during the appointment, so if you should choose to go forward with treatment, we can take care of your child's ties right away.
We will also discuss finances and provide you with the appropriate information to send to your insurance company.
